Sagbayan, Bohol – On November 9, 2024, a one-day dental mission in Sagbayan, Bohol, marked a meaningful revisit to the community, following a previous mission held last August 16-17 this year. Held at the Sagbayan Covered Court, the event provided vital dental care, such as oral prophylaxis (95 cleanings) and 107 tooth extractions performed. The success of this mission was made possible through the collaborative efforts of a dedicated team, including 4 dentists from the Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) in Manila, 2 TIMA Bohol dentists, Tzu Chi Bohol staff, Tzu Chi scholars, and Tzu Chi volunteers from Bohol and Manila. Together, they worked seamlessly to offer free dental services, once again bringing essential care and hope to the community.

Behind every successful mission, it is crucial to acknowledge those whose efforts often go unnoticed, those whose hearts and hands turn every event into a success. Throughout the day, a team of professionals, volunteers, scholars, and community members worked tirelessly to ensure that the dental services were delivered smoothly. Among them was Sister Cirila Salem, an active community volunteer from Sagbayan who has generously given her time to these events for two consecutive years. Sister Cirila emphasized that the guidance and kindness of the Tzu Chi staff played a big part in encouraging her to continue volunteering and ensuring the success of each mission.

“I serve in these kinds of events hosted by Tzu Chi because I want to contribute and help those who are in despair, especially the children facing dental issues,” she shared.

Another dedicated volunteer from Manila with six years of service under his belt, Brother Modesto Salinas is the man behind the dental equipment set-up but on the event day, everyone can see him sterilizing the dental tools, maintaining the hygiene of each dental equipment. “In this area of the event, I want to ensure that all the tools and equipment are well sanitized because this plays a crucial role in infection control,” he said. Despite the physical strain, including back aches from his duties, Brother Modesto finds fulfillment in his work. “It’s so rewarding to know that I’m helping people, and at the same time, I get to travel and be part of something so meaningful.”

Mark, a BS Mathematics student at Bohol Island State University, shared his first experience as a volunteer for the dental mission.

“Since it’s my first time volunteering in such a dental mission, I felt a bit anxious because I wasn’t familiar with the procedures and tools. But as a scholar and volunteer, it was fulfilling to be able to help others,” he reflected. Mark added that volunteering not only helped him grow personally but also opened his eyes to the needs of the community. “It helped me be more aware of my surroundings and the many people who need help. As a student, this experience has helped improve my moral values and sense of responsibility.”

Among the medical professionals was Dr. Midred Radovan, a retired dentist who has been serving the community alongside her husband, Dr. Proseso Radovan also a volunteer dentist, for almost ten years.

“Even with the many government programs, there are still those who are underserved and cannot access these services,” she said. “I’m proud to be part of a mission that extends help to these individuals.” Dr. Mildred emphasized that despite her retirement, her commitment to serving remains strong. “It’s rewarding and fulfilling to continue giving back to the community. As long as I have the strength, I will continue to serve with Tzu Chi and give back to the people.” Her dedication, alongside her husband’s, is a powerful reminder of the great impact of selfless service over the years.

Lastly, the heartwarming story of young Maria Rybelyn B. Viva, a 9-year-old Grade 4 student, captured the attention of many at the event. Maria expressed her gratitude to the Tzu Chi Foundation and all the volunteers for the care she received. “I really appreciate them all for helping me,” she said with a smile. What touched everyone was that Maria had brought her own small coin bank to the event. “I brought this to repay and share my blessings forward,” she explained. “The money I collected came from the pennies I found at home, which I saved in my bank to give back to those in need.” Maria’s gesture of kindness despite her young age, reminded everyone of the importance of giving back and the multiple effect of generosity within a community.

Behind the smiles and joy of the children are the dedicated and passionate individuals who poured their hearts into making this event possible—all choosing to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Their selflessness, hard work, and compassion brought hope and happiness to the children they served, proving that collective efforts, no matter how big or small, can leave an inspiring impact. It is their unwavering dedication and shared mission of spreading love and kindness that happiness lies in serving others, inspiring change, and creating a brighter future for our communities. We honor these unsung heroes for their tireless devotion and recognize the immeasurable impact of their service, one that Tzu Chi Bohol aims to continue for many years to come.
